Gourmet Finger Food, Catering for Delicious Finger Food14-Sep-2011
We decided to perform a little experiment on our own website to see if we could rank our website for a search term that is totally unrelated to our services, products and industry. So we looked over our competitors to see if we could compete and rank against one of their client's websites.
We have found a catering niche market to attack. Specifically, the gourmet food industry for Sydney. Currently the results we see when typing the search term Gourmet finger food is shown below. (as at 14 September 2011)
We can see the four websites we are targeting in our bid to get listed and attract traffic to our website. From our quick initial investigation into these websites and the rest of the first page rankings it would appear making the first page for this search term is certainly achievable.
Ranking Gourmet Finger Food high on Google
So over the coming weeks we are going to rank this page for the search term 'Delicious Gourmet Finger Food' and see how we perform against all the other finger food businesses out there in Sydney and Melbourne. Catering is a very competitive industry and the online competition is equally as fierce but we are confident we can get any page ranked highly for a chosen keyword.
One thing we aren't going to do is stuff our keywords meta tag with such words as, gourmet, catering, finger food, melbourne. Why? Because Google really doesn't pay much attention to this tag anymore. What is more important is the description meta tag which ideally should have some descriptive text describing the content of the page.
We won't use this tag just yet but you would want to say something along the lines of:
"Grayson Creative is a delicious gourmet finger food business in Sydney catering for large and small events across the Sydney Metro". The aim is to keep this description short and to the point. Google won't read past a certain number of characters so we won't waste our time too much with this tag for now. We can edit this tag later to tweak the keywords and positioning if needed.
The title of this news item will provide our title tag for the page so from the moment our news item is published we have a number of key onsite SEO components in place.
Because I know nothing about fine cuisine and catering for sophisticated tastes and to give the page some relevance for the search engines I am simply going to take some definitions of the words gourmet and finger food from Wikipedia.
- Gourmet (pronounced /ɡɔrˈmeɪ/) is a cultural ideal associated with the culinary arts of fine food and drink, or haute cuisine, which is characterised by elaborate preparations and presentations of large meals of small, often quite rich courses. The term and its associated practices are usually used positively to describe people of refined taste and passion
- Finger food is food meant to be eaten directly using the hands, in contrast to food eaten with a knife and fork, chopsticks, or other utensils. In some cultures, food is almost always eaten with the hands; for example, Ethiopian cuisine is eaten by rolling various dishes up in injera bread. In the South Asian subcontinent, food is traditionally always eaten without utensils. Foods considered street foods are frequently, though not exclusively, finger foods.
Lastly, we will create add a number of offsite optimisation components and sit back to see what happens. We will perform these activities in the coming days and review our performance in two weeks. That should be enough time for Google to index our item.
There's no guarantee that this page will outshine the top four listed businesses on Google for gourmet finger food currently but if we are anywhere close to them then the rest of the competition may want to talk with us to get their website listed alongside them.
That's all for now, stay tuned.
